Performer

A native of Warsaw and currently based in Brussels, Joanna has performed with some of the most respected figures in Early Music, including Philippe Herreweghe, Ton Koopman, Marco Beasley, Marcel Ponseele, Philippe Pierlot, Skip Sempé, and Raphaël Pichon, among others. She has toured extensively with Collegium Vocale Gent, Ricercar Consort, De Nederlandse Bachvereniging, Ensemble Aurora, A Nocte Temporis, and Pygmalion.

She completed her Master’s degree at the Koninklijk Conservatorium in The Hague, under the guidance of  Enrico Gatti.

Throughout the years of research and performance she has developed a particular interest in the vocal aspect of violin playing as one of the most important means to communicate with her audience.
She equally enjoys performing on other instruments of the violin family such as viola, violino piccolo as well as viola d’amore.

Educator

Teaching is an important part of her artistic life. Since 2019, she is guiding her own historical violin class at the Koninklijk Conservatorium in Brussels. She has also been a faculty member at the Conservatoire Royal de Bruxelles for several years and regularly gives masterclasses across Europe, Asia, and South America. Shortly after graduating, she was invited to establish a historical violin class at at the Music Academy in Łódź, Poland.
Since 2018, she has been coaching the musicians of the Aachener Sinfonieorchester, supporting their work in historically informed performance within a modern orchestral context.

Leader

As concertmaster, she works regularly with Il Gardellino, Luthers Bach Ensemble, Altberg Ensemble, A Nocte Temporis, and the Aachener Sinfonieorchester.

Over the years, she has led ensembles such as Les Muffatti, Les Agrémens, Capella Cracoviensis, Kölner Akademie, and Geneva Camerata.
Deeply rooted in the tradition of historically informed performance practice, her artistic curiosity frequently leads her into creative exchanges with musicians from jazz, contemporary, and world music scenes, as well as interdisciplinary projects involving dance and theatre.

Praise

"...l'engagement tant individuel que collectif de chacun de ses instrumentistes, admirablement cornaqués par le premier violon Joanna Huszcza. L'adéquation stylistique est totale (accents, ornementation, agogique, sonorité de l'ensemble très étudiée, si typique de l'opulence du Grand Siècle) et rien n'est laissé au hasard."

Resmusica

"[The orchestra] with Joanna Huszcza as the concertmaster, once again proves itself as an exceptionally skilful ensemble that (...) manages to combine exquisite playing technique and high-spirited inspiration particularly beautifully."

Opus Klassiek

"It was to be expected that Joanna Huszcza's brilliant interpretation of Johann Sebastian Bach's powerful and famous Chaconne for solo violin would be one of the highlights of the programme. Nevertheless, her performance, which encompasses all facets of the complex work both intellectually and technically, exceeded even the highest expectations.(...)"

Aachener Zeitung

"Joanna Huszcza performed the highly virtuoso violin part just as excellently as she had previously performed the Bach homage by the Belgian late romantic Eugène Ysaÿe."

Aachener Zeitung

"The public is far too unaware of the role played by violinist and orchestra leader Joanna Huszcza, who has been coaching orchestra members for several years. Under her direction, the musicians from the symphony orchestra were in top form. With charm and infectious energy, she fired up the ensemble to a small celebration of baroque playing and joie de vivre."

Aachener Zeitung

"Joanna Huszcza’s splendid playing of the demanding 1st violin part was a reminder that, in Mozart’s time, K287 was occasionally performed as a violin concerto."

Pamela Hickman

"...excellent contributions of the violinist Joanna Huszcza"

Musica Dei Donum

"Mention spéciale à Joanna Huszcza, bien connue dans le monde de la musique ancienne et du violon baroque, (...) elle offre une superbe et rare réplique à la viole d'amour."

Resmusica

"...Joanna Huszcza’s eloquent violin playing..."

Andrew Benson Wilson

"The obbligato violin played by Joanna Huszcza is stunningly beautiful and a model of how to partner a voice in Bach’s cantata writing."

Early Music Review

"...Joanna Huszcza’s tasteful violin obbligato."

Vision

Joanna sitting on a window sill holding a violin.

“I grew up in Poland and Japan with Polish-Vietnamese parents, surrounded by a variety of languages and traditions.
For me, music is a conversation across time—a balance of history, emotion, and personal expression.
While respecting the musical grammar of the past and blending research with intuition, I seek moments of connection with the listener that feel both immediate and timeless.”

Violin

Joanna’s instrument was made by Hendrick Jacobs in Amsterdam in 1689 and was faithfully restored to original playing condition by Philippe Poissonniez.
